I noted in an earlier post this Spring that a number of media companies have made investments in the digital education sector, including Bertelsmann AG, News Corp., Washington Post, and the New York Times. We can now add to the list, Random House, which invested in Flat World Knowledge – the open content digital textbook publisher. (Press release detailing the investment.) Below, is a presentation by News Corp’s Rupert Murdoch recorded in late May at the G8 Conference in France. Murdoch remarked “Everywhere we turn, digital advances are making workers more productive, creating jobs that did not exist only a few years ago and liberating us from the old tyrannies of time and distance,” Murdoch said. “This is true in every area except one: education.” He states that the current situation in education is “a colossal failure of imagination”.
